10. Dog noses can detect medical conditions. With a sense of smell that is 40 times that of a human’s, dogs can be trained to smell certain diseases and conditions, such as low or high blood sugar and even Covid-19!

9. Their wet noses help with their smelling too! While on the topic of noses, you may have noticed your dog’s nose is always wet. Well according to Purina, their wet noses actually help to absorb chemicals from different scents. When dogs lick their noses, they are able to better understand different smells. 

8. Bloodhounds have the best nose out of any dog breed. Ready to have your mind blown? The bloodhound has 300 MILLION scent receptors. They are known for being able to follow scent trails for over 100 miles and even trails that are several days old. 

7. Dogs can actually smell emotions! Well, they can smell when you perspire. So, say you are experiencing a stressful situation or are feeling afraid, a dog will be able to smell your perspiration and detect the change in emotion. 

6. Dogs are FAST. If you’ve seen your pup chase after a tennis ball or a squirrel, you already know that dogs can move pretty quickly. But did you know the Greyhound can run as fast as 45 miles per hour? 

5. Their hearing is impeccable. Dogs are known for being great sniffers, but they also have impressive hearing. While the human ear can detect sounds in a range from 64-23,000 HZ, dogs can hear sounds from 67-45,000 HZ, meaning dogs can hear much higher pitched sounds.

4. Guide dogs can help owners reach incredible feats! In 1990, a blind man hiked the Appalachian Trail with his trusty guide dog leading him the whole way! The dog’s name was Orient, and the pair became known as “the Orient Express.”

3. Dogs Have Three Eyelids! We’ve talked about their noses and their ears, and now it’s time for eyes! Dogs have three eyelids. In addition to top and bottom, their third eyelid is called the nictitating membrane and protects the eye from infection, removes debris, and helps produce tears. 

2. The oldest dog that ever lived made it to 29 years old! According to Guinness World Records, an Australian cattle dog named Bluey lived from 1910 to 1939. He worked with cattle and sheep for 20 years. 

1. The best predator in the world is a dog! Specifically, African hunting dogs, or hyena dogs. According to Guinness World Records, these pups are successful 50-70% of the time in capturing their prey.
