Back-to-school facts

All across the country, kids are getting ready to head back to school. There is always a certain excitement in the air this time of year, and we are definitely feeling it at GiftWorksPlus. There’s nothing like picking out new clothes, shoes, school supplies, and getting ready to see all your friends again!

In the spirit of back to school, we’d share the top 10 craziest school facts to get you in the spirit!

  1. The most populated high school in the United States is Brooklyn Technical High School in Brooklyn, NY. The school has a total of 8,076 students and 217 full-time teachers!
  2. The largest public K-12 school in the United States is Georgia Cyber Academy, in Atlanta, GA, with a total of 14,319 students!
  3. In contrast, the smallest school in the United States is Arvada Elementary School in Wyoming has a grand total of 10 students and 1 teacher!
  4. If you’re a fan of 80s rock, it may interest you to know that there’s a school for the deaf in Arkansas whose mascot is a leopard…making them the Arkansas School for the Deaf Leopards!
  5. Speaking of clever mascots, there is a school in California called Millennium High School, and for all the Star Wars fans, their mascot is the falcon! Making them the Millennium Falcons!
  6. The U.S. high school with the most state championship football wins is Washington High School in Sioux Falls, ND. They have won a total of 42 state championships!
  7. The oldest public school in the United States is The Boston Latin School. It was founded in 1635 and has some impressive alumni, including Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
  8. There is a school in New York that is “dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of magic and its allied arts…” It’s called the Conjuring Arts Research Center and specializes in everything from hypnosis to ventriloquism!
  9. Kris Hogan, a high school football coach in Grapevine, Texas, got half his school to cheer for their opposing team. The team was from the Gainesville correctional facility, and because all of their games are away, they never had fans cheering them on until this game!
  10. The Brooklyn Free School, in Brooklyn, NY, has “no standardized curriculum, no mandatory testing, and no grading.” Students do not have set rules to follow, they take part in deciding the curriculum and they choose their own classes.
