On May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan of the Northern Civil War Veterans asked for a nationwide day of remembrance for those who died while serving in the military. He called it Declaration Day and in 1871 it became an official holiday.
The first Declaration Day was held at Arlington National Cemetery. Approximately 5,000 attendees came to pay respect to the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. By 1890, each state had adopted it as a holiday and, over the next decade, Declaration Day gradually became known as Memorial Day. In 1968, Congress declared that Memorial Day would be recognized on the last Monday in May to honor those who have lost their lives fighting in every American war – a tradition that continues to this day.
This year, honor the veterans in your life by displaying precious memories in a custom engraved picture frame.
The “Our Hero” Alderwood frame is a popular choice for Memorial Day. It has a beautiful American flag etched in the picture frame and, with four sizes to choose from, GiftWorksPlus.com has just the right one for you and your loved ones.
"In Service for Our Country" is another favorite wooden picture frame designed to honor veterans. The wooden frame holds four pictures and includes a colorfully artistic American flag. Choose between portrait or landscape orientation and between oak or black frames. This 11”x14” engravable picture frame will catch the eye of everyone who passes by.
