The first Monday in September marks Labor Day, a national holiday designated as a day to take time to appreciate those who make up our country’s workforce. While many people know that Labor Day means a day off of work, they might not know the origin of Labor Day.
In 1882, various workers unions in New York City decided to have a parade to celebrate their members and to show support for their fellow unions. Nearly 20,000 people were at the parade and the union workers had the day off from work to attend (and miss a day’s pay). Other states including Oregon, Massachusetts, and Colorado started having their own parades in the following years and by 1894, Congress passed an act designating the first Monday in September a legal holiday known as Labor Day.
Being a part of a union isn’t quite as common today — in 2014, 14.6 million people belonged to a union, versus 17.7 million in 1983 — but Labor Day has evolved over the years into a wider celebration that still recognizes organized labor.
