New Year’s History:

  • The first New Year celebration dates back to Mesopotamia in 2000 B.C.
  • Ancient Persians would celebrate the New Year by giving the gift of eggs to one another, which was meant to symbolize productiveness.
  • The ancient Egyptian New Year began with the annual flooding of the Nile river.
  • It was Julius Caesar that made January 1st the first day of the New Year in 46 B.C.
  • The month January is named after the god Janus, who is said to have two faces with one looking forward and backward.

New Year’s Today:

  • One million people each year come to New York to watch the ball drop in Times Square, while almost a billion watch on TV.
  • Once the ball drops, around 2,000 pounds of confetti is dropped.
  • Foods are a big part of the holiday tradition. In Italy and Germany, leafy greens are eaten to represent financial success. In Cuba, pork is eaten to represent progress and prosperity. In the Netherlands, they eat ring shaped cakes to represent the year coming full circle and in Japan, they eat long noodles for a long life.
