With the Fourth of July approaching quickly, many people are getting in the patriotic mindset. Whether that is by purchasing fireworks, red white and blue decorations, or getting everything ready or that July 4th BBQ, we all have our ways of preparing to celebrate Independence Day. But at GiftWorksPlus we want to let you in on some interesting facts about the history of the holiday that may surprise you.

  • 1. July 4th is known as the day we declared independence from Great Britain, but as it turns out only two of the 56 founding fathers that signed the Declaration actually signed it on July 4th
  • 2. The first two that signed were John Hancock and Charles Thompson.
  • 3. Most of the other signers were said to have signed their name to the document on August 2nd, 1776.
  • 4. The ages of the signers of the declaration ranged from age 27 (Thomas Lunch Jr.) to 70 (Benjamin Franklin)
  • 5. Independence Day did not become a federal holiday until the year 1870, almost 100 years after it was adopted.
  • 6. Presidents (and signers of the declaration) John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th 1826 within mere hours of each other.
  • 7. Each Independence Day the Liberty Bell is lightly tapped thirteen times to honor the original thirteen colonies.
  • 8. Each year on the holiday, around 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed.

So while you and your friends and relatives are eating your hot dogs and pounds of chicken, feel free to share some of these interesting factoids with them!
