The United States adopted Grandparents’ Day in the late 1970s. Celebrated annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day, this holiday started when Marian McQuade made it her personal mission to educate youth about the contributions senior citizens have made. As part of the goal to enlighten young people about the importance of older people, she also encouraged the youth to adopt grandparents and build relationships with them.
After efforts from McQuade and several senators for more than five years, a National Grandparents’ Day was signed in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter to honor grandparents and the contributions of seniors. The holiday’s official flower is the Forget-Me-Not, and the official song as adopted in 2004 is Johnny Prill’s “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.”
Though flowers and song are great ways to honor beloved grandparents, GiftWorksPlus encourages young people to also present alder wood frames and keepsakes which will last a lifetime. At GiftWorksPlus, you will find nearly 40 engraved wooden frames honoring grandmothers, grandfathers, and great grandparents.
