As we enter the graduation season, you’re sure to be seeing plenty of pictures of grads of all ages celebrating in their cap and gown, holding their diploma, or throwing their caps up.
There are many traditions surrounding graduation. It’s a very important rite of passage that many celebrate at least once throughout their lives. Seeing all these graduation pictures recently made us here at GiftWorksPlus wonder: where does the tradition of the cap and gown come from?

  • 1.) Back in the 12th and 13th Centuries, students and teachers wore clerical clothing due to the church being very important at that time. Most teachers and professors were actually priests or monks.

  • 2.) The graduation attire that we know today originated from Oxford University in the 1300s. It was suggested that graduates dress in long gowns and robes to create unity among the graduating class.

  • 3.) The graduation cap started as a hood, which came from Celtics and Druid priests who wore them to symbolize their higher intelligence.

  • 4.) How did the hood become the cap we see today? Many historians believe that the hood evolved into the flat, square cap because it symbolizes a book. Others believe that the cap was formed in order to resemble the shape of the quad at the Oxford campus.
