As we were considering what makes camping such a great time, we could not forget the one classic camping dessert made over an open campfire: the s’more! But while everyone knows and loves s’mores, not many know where the idea came from.
Here’s a brief history on the origin of the s’more:
-While no one knows for sure what brilliant mind invented the s’more, the first published recipe actually came from a Girl Scout publication in 1927.
-The recipe was under the title “Some Mores” and was written by Loretta Scott Crew.
-Many argue that the recipe dates back to the Victorian age where popular desserts were “sandwich cookies” and were typically filled with a jam or cream.
-Others say that the treat could have gained inspiration from the chocolate covered marshmallow cookie “Mallomar” or even the “MoonPie.”
-Though roasting marshmallows was already a common practice for friends in the summertime during the 1890s, people opted to eat them directly off the stick rather than sandwiched between graham crackers and chocolate.
-The recipe for s’more seems to be evolving nowadays! Many have tried adding peanut butter, Nutella, jam, strawberries, and even caramel.
Regardless of how you enjoy your s’more, it’s sure to make your summer camping experience all the more fun and memorable.
