While we’re all cozied up and hibernating from the cold this winter, the groundhog is coming out of hiding right around this time.
Groundhog Day is a fun tradition where, on February 2nd of each year, it’s said that a groundhog comes out of its hole to look for its shadow. If he does see his shadow, he takes it as a sign of six more weeks of winter weather and goes back to his hole. But if it’s cloudy out and he can’t see his shadow, it’s a sign of spring and he will stay above ground.
This tradition has been around for a long time and has origins from several different cultures. Centuries ago in Europe, the tradition of Candlemas Day involved clergy blessing candles and then handing them out to people. The weather that day would determine how much wintertime was left. The Romans had a similar tradition as well and passed it on to the Germans, who decided that if a hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas Day that winter wasn’t over yet.
German settlers eventually brought this tradition over to America and the Groundhog Day tradition eventually became a part of American culture. The official American groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
