Did you know that just 10 days after the Fourth of July comes another equally exciting, yet greatly under-appreciated event? National Shark Awareness Day is on July 14th, which also kicks off “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel! So, to help you get in the spirit of things, we thought we’d share some unknown facts about sharks.
Check out a few of our favorites:

  1. Sharks have been around for 450 million years. They were actually present on earth before dinosaurs.
  2. Sharks are made of cartilage rather than bone, which makes them more buoyant.
  3. The average shark has around 45 teeth in several different rows in their mouth. However, they lose their teeth quite often. Some sharks go through about 30,000 teeth in a lifetime.
  4. The largest shark is the whale shark that grows to around 41 feet long.
  5. The smallest shark is the dwarf lantern shark that grows to around 6 inches.
  6. Most sharks can never sleep! Sharks have to pump water through their mouth and gills to breathe, so they must always keep swimming.
  7. Sharks can hear from up to 3,000 feet away.
  8. Sharks can move both their lower and upper jaws.
  9. Sharks cannot make sounds as they have no vocal folds.
  10. Great white sharks can jump out of water for food—up to about 10 feet!
  11. The first shark pup that is born in its mother’s womb will eat its unborn siblings until there are only two left in the womb, one on each side.
