Grandparents Day was founded by Marian McQuade in an effort to educate young people about the important contributions made by senior citizens. The first attempt to make Grandparents Day a national holiday was in 1973. The attempt failed to pass; however, in 1977 the legislation was passed. On August 3, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed it into law.
