Honor those who have given their lives to defend America.

Much more than a three-day weekend, Memorial Day is an important national holiday to remember the people who have dedicated, or ultimately given, their lives to serving in our country’s armed forces. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who have died in military service. Three of the most famous memorials honoring those who served are the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the National WWII Memorial, and the Marine Corps War Memorial.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was first unveiled on November 13, 1982. A contest was held for the design of the memorial, and out of over 1,400 entries, the winner was a 21-year-old college student named Maya Lin. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, with the names of over 58,000 U.S. soldiers who were killed during the war listed on black granite slabs, is one of the most popular and most visited attractions in Washington, D.C.
The National WWII Memorial is also located in Washington, D.C., and was built to honor the people who served in the armed forces during World War II, and the more than 400,000 people who died. The memorial features a fountain and an oval pool surrounded by pillars, and was opened to the public on April 29, 2004.
The Marine Corps War Memorial was "In honor and in memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since November 10, 1775." The memorial statue was recreated from a famous image of four marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising an American flag on Iwo Jima. President Eisenhower dedicated the memorial on November 10, 1954 – the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps.
