This December, GiftWorksPlus is looking at the history and traditions of various popular winter holidays. So far we’ve covered the traditions and history of Hanukkah and Christmas. Next, is Kwanzaa which is celebrate from December 26th through January 1st.
Of the many holidays celebrated in December, Kwanzaa is one of the newest. Originating in the 1960’s, Kwanzaa is a seven day celebration developed by a professor in California to celebrate African-American heritage.
Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to help African-Americans celebrate their roots. The name of the holiday comes from a Swahili phrase for “first fruits,” and Kwanzaa combines traditional African harvest customs and traditions from several different cultures.
Similar to Hanukkah, a central tradition of Kwanzaa is to light a candle every night during the holiday with each candle representing a specific principle. The seven principles that Kwanzaa celebrates are: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Each night, a principle is discussed and reflected upon. These principles emphasize unity, community, responsibility, and determination.
Kwanzaa also has seven symbols represented during the holiday. These symbolic items are placed on a mat in the home and act as the focal point of Kwanzaa celebrations. The symbols are the mat, crops (represented by fruits, vegetables or nuts), ears of corn (representing fertility and children), candles, the candleholder, a unity cup, and gifts.
