To create a template, trace the frame shape onto a piece of paper, cut it out, and tape it to the wall. Level it and mark hole placement, then drill or nail right through the paper.
Alternately, hold the frame to the wall. Have a helper level the frame and then mark corners in pencil on the wall. Measure from the drawn corner to where the bracket should attach or where the fastener should be placed. Mark that position, drill or nail, attach the fastener, and erase the pencil marks.
