Outdoor near tree and fall leaves.

There is something so beautiful about autumn in the Midwest. While there are plenty of fun fall festivities to get you and the family outside, hiking is one of the best ways to explore the gorgeous colors of fall. In fact, autumn provides some of the most picturesque backdrops for a family picture, and there’s no better way to get some of these stunning views than going on a scenic hike.

Here are some of the best hiking trails in Wisconsin and Minnesota that you'll definitely want to check out.

Best Hiking Trails in the MidWest

  1. Eagle Mountain Trail, MN: This trail takes you up to the highest point in the whole state of Minnesota, so you’ll be sure to get some incredible views! Remember to proceed with caution, as this trail can be tricky with rocks, roots, and some steep hills.
  2. Chester Creek Hiking Trail, MN: Here is another favorite among the locals. It's a short loop and has been deemed safe for kids, as well. Just be sure to stay back from some of the edges above the creek, as they can get steep. Dogs are also welcome on leashes!
  3. Devil’s Doorway, WI: This is a short but beautiful hike. The Devil’s Doorway trail on Devil’s Lake features stunning views of both the lake, as well as the rock formation known as the “doorway.” It’s the perfect place to get great family pictures. It also makes a fun trip for Halloween season.
  4. Quincy Bluff and Wetlands, WI: This area features a two-mile long, 200-foot-high mesa that is perfect for experienced hikers. Visitors recommend this destination for late fall and early winter hikes, meaning this is its hiking primetime!
