custom picture frames for Oktoberfest
There are so many reasons for why fall is one of the best seasons of the year! The leaves changing colors, beginning of football season, new school year, and fun holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. But this week, GiftWorksPlus is going to focus on a special fall event that comes straight from Deutschland! That’s right, this week we are talking about the one and only Oktoberfest. In the spirit of the upcoming celebration in Germany, we thought we’d share some historical (and fun) facts about the festival!
-The tradition stems from a royal wedding in 1810. Prince Ludwig I married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12th. The people of Munich were all invited to attend the party in front of the city gates.
-The royal wedding was closed with horse races, which then turned into a yearly tradition in Bavaria.
-The horse race tradition then began adding other features, including agriculture shows, carousels, and soon enough…beer stands!
-In the 1890s, the beer stands were traded in for beer halls, and many breweries began backing the festival.
-Traditional attire of lederhosen and dirndls were (and often still are) worn at the festival.
-Nowadays, Oktoberfest begins in Germany at the end of September and ends the first weekend of October, and festivals include parades, live music, dancing, rides, and of course, plenty of German food and beverages…and by beverages, we mostly mean beer.
-Speaking of beer, around 1.8 million gallons of beer is consumed during the festival in Munich.
-With all that beer, it’s a good thing the Red Cross sets up beds for those who have had a bit too much. They also keep spare pants…in case you’ve had WAY too much.
